Authority & accountability

Chain of Ownership

Who gets to change a decision—and on what basis?

As a product grows, the knowledge needed to shape it becomes distributed. Chain of Ownership asks how decision authority should relate to relevant expertise, responsibility, and consequence.

A founder can hold unique knowledge of why a product began. That knowledge doesn’t make one person equally equipped to decide every later question in research, design, engineering, accessibility, or operations.

The developing argument examines what happens when formal authority moves further from the work. An override should remain accountable: its basis, scope, and consequences should be inspectable rather than erasing the reasoning it replaces.

This remains a working theory. The current direction develops the tension between founding knowledge and ongoing decision authority.
